Recruiting Checklist and Questions to Ask
Use this document to keep track of different schools that are recruiting you. Fill out the checklist for each college or university that shows interest. Use the questions to create more informative dialogue during phone calls. The more you know the better you will feel about your final decision.
TIP: Get a three-ring binder and organize your checklists. Keep a copy of the "questions to ask" in the binder near a table or desk at home that is easily accessible when coaches call.
NCAA Division One Eligibity Calculator and Spreadsheet
This eligibility spreadsheet comes from our friends at Montrose Christian. This tool is extremely helpful and calculates core GPA using a player's past class grades. Also included in the spreadsheet is the NCAA Division One sliding scale.
TIP: When calculating your NCAA core GPA, many players make the common mistake of adding non-approved classes (such as art, physical education, and computer classes). Use this website to check the courses the NCAA approves from your high school.
Basketball Behavior Contract
We use this behavior contract for all our teams. We go over it with the full group and each player initials and signs a contract. We have a "team version" with all signatures that hangs on the locker-room bulletin board as a reminder. Contracts like this are useful because players know the consequences of their actions. For our sub-varsity teams we add a "no pass, no play" stipulation. Players are not allowed to dress until they are passing all six classes. It's amazing what having to sit the bench in street clothes can do to a young man's academic motivation.
This is a great way to get players to hold each other accountable on and off the floor. Teams are picked based on "character" rather than skill.
